TRACES

Trust by Rational A.U. Chemical Engg. Students

As adults, even as we enjoy our prosperous lives, we are often reminded of our struggles as students and young professionals that have led to those sweet moments of success.

These struggles, I believe, have helped shape us - like metal is tempered in a forge. But these paths to success haven't been empty, they have been paved with the helping hands of kind mentors

Often as students at Andhra University, when we lacked resources to get through tough times, our Professors, who themselves lived frugally, had never shied away from supporting us. Monetary help wasn't readily available. When the opportunity arose in 1999 to do our part in helping struggling students, the 1988-92 Andhra University Chemical Engineering Alumni started TRACES. The Trust was a humble effort on our behalf to pay back to our Alma Mater by providing scholarships to deserving students.

Background

The Trust is a product of some enterprising minds coming together in a conscientious way. The TRACES committee consists of C S Ram Kishore, M V S Venu Madhav, P Murali Prasad and myself.

But the Trust is more than just the committee. It would have failed without the concerted efforts of Chamarthy Prasad, Chavali Sree Rama Kishore, M.V.J. Sarma, N. Srinivas Krishna, Alapati Rama Rao and Mary Sujatha. Naidu Lakshmi Narayan, P B S Srinivas, and CPC Kamlakar Rao have been crucial to the growth and expansion of the Trust.

I would be remiss not to mention Profs V S R K Prasad and K Venkateshwara who helped drive our Mission to its destination. Following in their footsteps, Profs M Narasimha Rao, Sujatha and S Subba Rao are serving as the wheels of the Trust now.

Mission and Objectives

Our mission is to ensure that TRACES remains sustainable even in the long-run and its reach and impact spreads even to the lowest strata of the society, hailing from both rural and the sub-urban areas.

Our objective is to provide financial aid to brilliant young minds, in need of some nurturing and support in order to achieve their dreams. If we do not lend our help to such people, who else will?

Our Work

We have given annual scholarship to sincere students in need, with slowly increasing amounts from the year 1999 till 2015 (except for the year 2008 when we were faced with insufficient funds). The following prizes were given during the academic year (2015-16) to students of Final Year B. Tech (Chemical Engineering):

  1. First prize of Rs. 10,000/- for Best Academic Performance (The student being selected based on the criteria of highest percentage marks scored. The percentage marks being calculated as the total aggregated marks for the first three years over the total possible marks).
  2. Second prize of Rs. 5,000/- for Best Academic Performance (The student being selected based on the criteria of second highest percentage marks scored. The percentage marks being calculated as the total aggregated marks for the first three years over the total possible marks).
  3. Best Improvement in Academic Performance prize of Rs. 6,000/- (The student being selected based on the criteria of highest improvement in the percentage marks scored in the batch. Improvement could be calculated based on the difference between a student's third year percentage and first year percentage).
  4. Second Best Improvement in Academic Performance prize of Rs. 4,000/- (The student being selected based on the criteria of second highest improvement in the percentage marks scored in the batch. Improvement could be calculated based on the difference between a student's third year percentage and first year percentage).

In a way, TRACES is a means of ‘paying forward’. Perhaps our help today will set up a needy student on his or her way to success. And they may in turn, help someone in return. Thus, the cycle of goodwill can continue.
